Who it's for
QSimHealth is used to teach the operations side of care delivery: why patients wait, how staffing should follow demand, and what each option costs. It fits physician executive MBA programs, MHA and health administration courses, and medical school courses on systems and leadership. Students work with a real simulation instead of a spreadsheet, and every answer they give can be checked by running it.
What you and your students get
- Free trial: anyone can try QSimHealth free for 10 days. Sign in with a Google or Microsoft account.
- Academic institution: let's talk. A site license for medical schools and PEMBA programs, with citation rights, classroom use and alumni access.
Both are listed with the other plans on the pricing section.
Where it comes from
QSimHealth was developed with the University of Tennessee Physician Executive MBA program. It grew out of operations research and queuing methodology applied in graduate medical education, and runs on discrete-event simulation: every patient modeled individually across a simulated year.
Teaching case: ED staffing with QSimHealth
Learning goals
- Explain why waits rise much faster than provider workload.
- Read arrivals by hour and match coverage to them.
- Weigh the cost of a staffing change against what it does to patient wait.
- Write a staffing recommendation a department chair could act on.
The base case
An emergency department sees about 81 patients a day, with two MDs on around the clock and visits averaging 20 minutes. In QSimHealth the base case averages a 12.1-minute wait, with the worst hour at 6pm (20 minutes). Students open the base case in the app and work from there.
The assignment
- Find the hours where patients wait longest and explain why.
- Rearrange the same 48 MD hours to lower the wait. What gets better, and what gets worse?
- Test a 20% increase in volume. Where does the schedule break first?
- Price one added shift, MD or PA, and decide where it should go.
What students submit
- A one-page staffing memo with a recommendation and its cost per day.
- The scenarios behind it, saved as images or CSV from the app.
